PhD Curriculum & Instruction: Reading/Literacy Education

 

Overview

The PhD in Curriculum & Instruction is structured to support interdisciplinary studies and individualization for researchers and practitioners. Advanced coursework and research in the liberal arts and social sciences are emphasized. Students will focus on the types of research available in their fields of study and the appropriate application of these skills. Students will complete a dissertation in the reading/literacy content area during the course of the program. 

Program Structure

The program requires (90) hours beyond the bachelor’s degree, at least twelve of which are to be taken outside the School of Education.

Fifty hours must be taken in the student’s area(s) of specialization.

Dissertation hours (EDCI 9000): a minimum of twelve hours and a maximum of eighteen hours must be taken within the 90-hour program. (Additional hours may be taken beyond the 18 hours but cannot be used to satisfy the research requirement.)

Electives - Up to twelve hours may be taken with the major advisor’s approval

or

Twelve to eighteen hours, or as required by the minor field, may be taken. At least one doctoral committee member must represent the minor field.

 

Writing Pedagogy Minor

The Writing Pedagogy Minor may be used with graduate degrees in Curriculum & Instruction.

Requirements

The school-level academic course plan for each student is developed in consultation with and approved by the student’s graduate advisory committee. The committee includes the student’s major advisor and at least two additional members of the graduate faculty.

The student must pass a General exam consisting of written questions and a comprehensive oral exam; write a dissertation proposal and pass an oral defense of the proposal; and write a dissertation, and pass an oral defense of the dissertation.
