LSU CM PhD Candidate Recognized as SEC Emerging Scholar

August 30, 2023

Shashank MuleyBATON ROUGE, LA – LSU Bert S. Turner Department of Construction Management PhD candidate Shashank Muley was recently recognized as an SEC Emerging Scholar. The SEC Emerging Scholars Program was created to offer graduate students enrolled in terminal degree programs at member institutions a pathway to prepare for tenure-stream positions in higher education. The SEC sees a strategic advantage in sharing information that will contribute to this shared goal and encourages graduates to seek positions within SEC institutions.

“I am thrilled and honored to have been selected for the SEC Emerging Scholar program,” Muley said. “This conference presents a remarkable opportunity to connect with fellow research scholars from various SEC universities and foster meaningful interactions with faculty members and university representatives from 14 SEC institutions.”

Muley, who is a fourth-year PhD candidate, is researching automation and safety in construction under the guidance of LSU CM Associate Professor Chao Wang.

“My research specifically focuses on evaluating workers’ behavior through sensing and its impact on construction safety,” Muley said. “Essentially, the aim is to identify the factors that can facilitate improved preventive measures to reduce injuries and create a robust safety climate for the construction industry.”

In early October, Muley will attend the 2023 SEC Emerging Scholars Program and Career Preparation Workshop at the University of Arkansas alongside the other four chosen scholars. The workshop will involve activities on each day, including networking opportunities with researchers from other SEC institutions, featured presentations and panels by SEC faculty, breakout sessions, and professional development opportunities that include developing teaching portfolios, dealing with bias, what to expect as a new faculty member, and tips for applying and interviewing for academic positions.

Eligibility requirements to become an SEC Emerging Scholar include advancing beyond the first year of graduate work, demonstrating exceptional research and/or teaching skill, and showing an interest in seeking a career in higher education.
