LSU Career Chats: Getting Expo-Ready

February 05, 2024

As the semester kicks into high gear, the LSU Olinde Career Center is gearing up for its most popular recruiting event – The Career Expo! Join us Wednesday, February 7, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. This event promises to be a pivotal moment for students to connect with prospective employers and take the next step in their professional journey.

Career Expo networking

The Career Expo brings together a diverse range of employers, spanning various industries to connect with students of all majors. It is the largest recruiting event of the semester, offering students a unique opportunity to explore career paths, engage with recruiters, and potentially secure internship opportunities, along with part-time and full-time positions.

How to prepare for Career Expo:

First impressions matter and you want to put your best self forward at recruiting events. Use these helpful tips to shake off the pre-event jitters.

Be prepared to network: The Career Expo is not just a job fair; it's a chance to network with industry professionals. Take advantage of the networking receptions to build meaningful connections and gain insights into your desired field. The Engineering Networking Reception takes place before the Expo, and our Business Networking Reception takes place a few weeks later during Business Recruiting Week. These are a great way to connect in a space that feels smaller than the Career Expo.

Practice makes perfect: Join us for a group appointment or drop-in for help with resumes, elevator pitches, interviewing and engaging with employers at events.

These events provide a safe space for you to practice talking to employers, giving you the confidence you need to shine during real interviews.

Research the employers attending: From leading corporations to innovative startups, the Career Expo hosts a wide array of employers eager to meet talented students like you. Take some time to view the employers in Handshake. We recommend choosing a few employers you know you want to chat with and making those connections a priority. The Career Expo can get a bit hectic with everyone navigating the space – having a game plan will make the chaos more manageable! Learn more about researching potential employers using our online resouces.

Know what to wear and what to bring: We encourage students to come as they are to the Expo. Students who are seeking jobs and internships are encouraged to dress above the day-to-day operations by dressing in business casual or professional attire.

If you can, leave your backpack behind, we will have a student lounge with refreshments where you can store your backpack in case.

Bring your resume. We do not have access to a printer to print your documents for you. Come prepared with a few copies and either a folder or padfolio to store your resume and any business cards you might collect during the event.
