Teamwork: Your Key to Success

Tips from a career coach about teamwork

At the LSU Career Center, we believe that teamwork makes the dream work. While it's possible to complete tasks independently, incorporating others into your planning and delegating responsibilities can lead to successful outcomes.

Teamwork in Action

Many of my successful projects are the result of collective effort. For instance, during Business Recruiting Week, the entire team collaborates to ensure everything runs smoothly:

  • Scheduling Coordination: Aligning schedules with employers to maximize participation.
  • Logistics: Reserving rooms and managing event spaces.
  • Hospitality: Ordering food and coordinating with business managers for seamless service.

Similarly, for Careers on the Geaux, teamwork is crucial:

  • Employer Engagement: Coordinating schedules with employers and arranging transportation.
  • Collaboration: Working with the EDR team to identify target employers.
  • Student Outreach: Partnering with the communications team to market the event.
  • Compliance: Ensuring policies and liabilities are managed with the Operations team.

Why is teamwork important?

Teamwork is essential because it brings diverse perspectives and skills together, enhancing the quality of work and fostering innovation. It allows for:

  • Shared Responsibilities: Reducing individual workloads and preventing burnout.
  • Collective Problem-Solving: Leveraging different viewpoints to find the best solutions.
  • Increased Accountability: Encouraging team members to stay focused and committed.

How is teamwork developed?

Teamwork skills are cultivated through various experiences, including:

  • Class Projects: Collaborating with peers on academic assignments.
  • On-Campus Jobs: Working in university offices or departments.
  • Student Organizations: Participating in clubs and societies.
  • Volunteer Work: Engaging in community service activities.

Insights from the Field:

Colton Rachal, a Senior Compensation Analyst at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Louisiana, emphasizes the importance of teamwork in his role:

"I think that teamwork is essential to my work in human resources. There are many times where I need not only an extra pair of hands to get a project done, but I also need the perspective of others. If I want to launch a round of compensation changes for a select area, having my teammates as a soundboard for my plans keeps me in the right direction and accountable to what we as a compensation team want to accomplish in our organization. The skills I learned at LSU, like listening to everyone in the group or creating a team environment where ideas can flow, have helped us be successful in our mission."

At the LSU Career Center, we recognize that teamwork is not just a skill but a cornerstone of success. By working together, we can achieve more and create a supportive, dynamic environment where everyone thrives.
