Minor in Physics / Nuclear Science
Information on Courses for Non-Physics Majors: Dr. Dana Browne
Undergraduate Advisor for Physics Majors: Dr. David Young and Dr. Kenneth Matthews
Our Undergraduate Program is for students wishing to major in Physics and Astronomy, Medical and Health Physics, or who would like to minor in Physics. The usual course of study includes Calculus, General Physics including laboratory experiments in the first year. In the second year, courses in differential equations, modern physics, mechanics are suggested. In your junior and senior years, you can choose an area in which to concentrate - Physics, Minor in Physics, Astronomy, Medical/Health Physics, Secondary Education or Second Discipline.
Undergraduate Minor in Physics
Students who are not majoring in physics may opt to obtain a minor in physics. To complete a minor in physics, you first need to complete the introductory physics sequence with the labs. That would be either PHYS 1201 General Physics for Physics Majors (4)General Physics for Physics Majors , 1202, 1208 and 1209, or PHYS 2110, 2112, 2113, 2108 and 2109. In addition, you must complete PHYS 2221 and three additional lecture courses. At least one of the courses should be at the 4000 level. The lecture courses can be chosen from PHYS 2203, 2231, 2411, 3098 or any three credit hour PHYS or ASTR courses numbered from 4100 to 4299. The total amount of hours to obtain a physics minor is 22-23 hours.
Undergraduate Minor in Nuclear Science
A minor in nuclear science is also available to undergraduates, including students majoring in physics. You must get the approval of the department to complete this minor. You first complete the introductory sequence with the accompanying labs, either as PHYS 2110, 2112, 2113, 2108, 2109 or PHYS 1201 General Physics for Physics Majors (4)General Physics for Physics Majors , 1202, 1208, 1209. You then take 12 additional credit hours from the following list: PHYS 2203, 2207, 3098, 4271; MEDP 2051, 4331, 4351, 4352; NS 4352, 4411, 4570. Students major in Physics must take at least nine hours of courses not being used to fulfill their physics degree.
